This frame story for the entirety of the work is the common thread between each edition of Nights. Shahryar is a king who rules over India and China.
Shahryar marries and executes several virgins, each on the morning after they are married. The king postpones her execution to find out the end of the story.
The next night she finishes her story but begins a new one, and Shahryar postpones her execution again. They continue this for 1, nights.
Thankfully, a Disney-approved happy ending is in store. The husband had bought three unique apples for his wife when she was ill, and when he found a slave with one of the apples, the slave claimed his girlfriend gave it to him.
In a rage, the man killed his wife. In Basrah, a tailor and his wife came upon an amusing hunchback who they decided to invite to their home for dinner.

This convinces Yunan that Duban is guilty and he has him executed. Yunan later dies after reading a book of Duban's, the pages of which had been poisoned.
He erects eight statues of gold or diamond and in quest for a statue for the ninth unoccupied pedestal, finding what he wanted in the person of a beautiful woman for a wife.
Al-Asnam is given a mirror by a Genie. Called the touchstone of virtue, the mirror would inform Al-Asnam, upon looking into it, whether his damsel was faithful or not.
If the mirror remained unsullied so was the maiden; if it clouded, the maiden had been unfaithful. She is named after Samarkand , the city well-known at the time of the story for its emeralds.
She is bought by, and falls in love with, Ali Shar with whom she lives until she is kidnapped by a Christian.
